We’re honored to be partnering with NYPL Picture Collection for Black History Month, facilitating weekly curations from black archivists revolving around themes that rein true in communities across the diaspora.
These images were selected by Ianko F Joseph @iankofj , a Haitian-American photographer & archivist operating out of Bed-Stuy BK.
“Our Hair”

Hair; an emblem of one’s personality, a window to the soul; a badge of honor bestowed upon us by our ancestors. Hair connects us in our families, communities, workspaces, and abroad.

It’s a signifier of pride in one’s self, especially in black culture. Braids, twists, fades, coils, blowouts, knots, extensions, locs, or just a simple Afro.Â

These are the tools in which we use to paint the story of our rich history.
Selections / Words by Ianko F Joseph.
Works provided by the New York Public Library Picture Collection.
